PULUY-AN

a solo exhibit by Roland Llanera

Built on layers of brown, sienna and gray, Llarena constructs an atmosphere of nostalgia in his exhibit Puluy-An, the Hiligaynon word for “house” or “dwelling”. Through a series of paintings and prints, he expands the notion of home beyond its conventional definition as a singular place where one is at peace with his loved ones. His choice of houses and infrastructures in this body of work display signs of wearing down highlighted by the illusion made by his choice of colors reminiscent of old films. None were captured in their ideal state. None also directly belonged to the artist. However, each space offered itself to be his dwelling in different points in time. Each house contributed also to the landscape of his hometown, something the artist cherished dearly. The exhibit is an interweaving of the self and his environment. Puluy-An is a simultaneous documentation of two entities: the demolishment of his hometown’s heritage, as well as the development of his own self.
